Furthermore, little is known about the precise psychological processes through which the presence of pets can be beneficial to humans. Going beyond a strict comparison of pet owners and non-pet owners, this project aims to identify, among pet owners specifically, the psychological processes that operate in our relationships with pets.

This new knowledge allows us to better understand how the presence of animals in our lives can be beneficial (or not) to human well-being and health.

Testing the causal role of mindfulness

As part of this research project, a study investigating the role of mindfulness in the presence of one’s dog was conducted to test whether dogs’ presumed capacity to capture our attention and to focus on the present moment can produce an increase in human psychological well-being. Furthermore, the study aimed to test whether the affiliative behaviors of the dog and their owner during the session, as well as the synchronization of the owner’s and their dog’s behaviors, have an impact on dog owners’ well-being during the study.

This study included two conditions:

An experimental ‘mindfulness’ condition (20 minutes), during which human participants were asked to perform mindfulness exercises with their dog. These exercises were adapted from established mindfulness exercises.

A control condition (also 20 minutes) in which participants performed neutral activities (e.g., memory game) that did not promote mindfulness with their dog.

Each of these 2 conditions included 4 exercises.

The statistical analyses conducted to date have compared the levels of psychological well-being of dog owners, as well as the affiliative and synchronization behaviors exhibited by owners and their dogs, in the experimental and control conditions. These analyses also took into account possible order effects; that is, the order in which participants completed the experimental and control conditions.

Here are the main results that emerged from this study:

Dog owners reported higher levels of mindfulness in the experimental condition than in the control condition, confirming the expected effect of the experimental manipulation.

Psychological well-being: Dog owners reported higher levels of well-being when performing the exercises in the experimental condition than in the control condition. These differences were observed across all of the well-being indicators that we measured in this study. Specifically, compared to the control condition, participants in the experimental condition reported experiencing more: positive emotions, self-transcending emotions, eudaimonic emotions, as well as more joy, contentment, awe, gratitude, a sense of small-self (which implies a feeling of being connected to something greater than oneself), meaning in life, vitality, social connection, and connection with their dog.

Affiliative and Synchronisation Behaviors: Regarding the dogs’ behaviors, analyses revealed that dogs initiated more physical contacts, eye contact, and communication with their owners, and that they looked at their owners for longer periods in the experimental condition compared to the control condition.

Regarding the owners’ behaviors, analyses demonstrated that owners petted and communicated with their dog more frequently, and called and played with their dog more frequently, in the experimental condition compared to the control condition. Owners also used more obedience commands with their dogs in the experimental condition than in the control condition. Finally, owners spent more time looking at their dog, petting them, talking to them, and playing with them in the experimental condition than in the control condition.

Regarding the synchronization behaviors, analyses revealed more local synchronization behaviors (which occur when the owner and their dog are close to each other) and activity synchronization behaviors (which occurs when the owner and their dog do the same activity at the same moment) in the experimental condition compared to the control condition. Moreover, this local synchronization was of longer duration in the experimental condition than in the control condition. Conversely, longer activity synchronization was observed in the control condition than in the experimental condition; this result could be due to the fact that in the control condition, the dog and their owner were sitting and lying down, respectively, for a longer period of time.

Mediation analyses: These analyses aimed to determine whether specific behaviors exhibited by dogs and their owners help us understand how the experimental condition exerts its beneficial effect on well-being. In other words, which behaviors manifested by dogs and their owners, and elicited more by the experimental condition than by the control condition, subsequently have a beneficial effect on the owners’ well-being?

Four mediation models showed that the experimental condition positively influenced certain well-being variables via two key behaviors:

The frequency at which the dog initiates interactions with their owner predicted an increase in feelings of “small-self”

The duration of communication between the owner and their dog predicted an increase in awe, gratitude, and vitality.

More results are coming soon regarding this research project!

Team members

Lead researcher:

–
